Requirements For Volunteer Firefighter

18 years of age.
Ability to pass Firefighter I exam within 6 months of joining.
No criminal arrests.

All applications are screened by the investigating committee and voted on by the department.  Upon acceptance, you will be given a physical and drug screen (at city expense) to ensure your ability to perform duties required of you.

Requirements For Professional Firefighter

18 years of age.
High school diploma or GED.
Application for Civil Service Exam.

All applications will be processed and turned over to the civil service board.  An exam is given approximately once a year.

New employees are sent to LSU Fire Academy for 8 weeks and are certified to the firefighter II level upon completion.

$100,000 life insurance policy issued to all employees.

Work Schedule

The Crowley Fire Department has three (3) shifts.  Each shift works a 24 hour day on a 21 day cycle.  The shifts are split into the following schedules:

  • 1 on/1off, for 10 days, then 3 off, then
  • 1 on/4 off, then
  • 1 on/3 off, then begins again.

Shifts begin at 6 pm nightly and are replaced at 6 pm the following night.

Each shift usually consists of 4 captains, 2 drivers, and 3 firefighters.
